Music
and lyrics by Mor Karbasi
When
Spain’s Ladino-speaking Jewish population fled the
Inquisition in 1942, only their most beautiful songs
survived. Mor Karbasi is now reviving this ancient
tradition.
Mor: “When I
sing I feel connected to myself but also separate, as if
singing allows me to go out of my body and feel lighter.
When I first heard Ladino music, I felt at home. But I also
wanted to make it my own and contribute to the revival of
this beautiful culture, which is why I started to write
songs in Ladino and Spanish. This way I have made Sephardic
music an inseparable part of myself.
“Volveremos
is about
being far from home for a long time. When I sing it, I feel
warm in my heart. It's very personal to me, as I also live
far from my home, but everyone can put their own
interpretation on it.”

I
dream of the far away spring
I dream of bells in your laughter
Our ship is waiting among the waves that cry out a melody,
Let us return, my dove, to the far away spring…
The despair of the day becomes night,
The sea is bitter, it cries to the sight of dawn
Let us sail to fields of wheat
Let us return, my dove, to the far away spring…
