Kala
Chethena Kathakali was founded in 1987 to raise awareness
of the ancient South Indian art form of Kathakali (meaning
‘story-play’) in the UK.
Kalamandalam Barbara Vijayakumar:
“Music
is an integral part of Kathakali and is vital to the actor,
who is translating the poetry into gesture. The singing
contains the emotion of the play and, together with the
drumming, creates the atmosphere that transports the
audience into the dramatic world of Kathakali.
“This
excerpt is from the play Daksha
Yaga, which
tells the story of Lord Shiva and his wife, Sati. Here Sati
is explaining to Lord Shiva that even though her father,
King Daksha, has rejected her she still wants to attend his
special Yaga
ceremony.”
