The
Japanese Buddhist monks from Kyoto offer a rare glimpse of
life in a Japanese temple. The addition of improvised music
on India flute (bansurai)
takes their performance to a different plane.
Hiroshi:
“I noticed that the way of Buddhist chanting in Japan
can be traced to the ancient Indian way from which Indian
classical music later developed. Consequently, in 1993, I
worked with the monks in Kyoto to see how both these styles
might converge. Since then we have been performing together
around the world.
“Although
sutra
chanting
and Hindustani music are both very old forms of music, I
find the combination of these two sounds new and
peaceful.”
