Anon. The tablature for Flowing Water first appeared in 1425 in Shenqi Mipu (Spiritual and Mysterious Score) and it was compiled and edited by Prince Zhu Quan (1378-1348) of the Ming Dynasty.

Cheng Yu: “Although the guqin [Chinese zither] is not my major instrument, I love the sound, the philosophy, the stories and the rich history behind it. The zither is an inseparable part of myself because of its contemplative sound and meditative nature. I play it almost every morning and it calms me down, regulates my qi (breath), clears my mind and elevates my spirit.

“This piece is one of my favourites. It vividly depicts various movements of flowing water, from a gentle trickle to a powerful waterfall. On one level this piece portrays the nature, beauty, subtleness and aliveness of water; on another level it reflects love of music and close friendship between people, brought together through nature.”
