The
pealing of church bells is one of the sonorous gems of our
sacred music heritage. A call to prayer, a joyous
celebration, or a mournful tolling, bellringing is an
ancient skill that retains the power to transport us to
life beyond the material.
Brighton and Hove has one of the UK’s best
bellringing bands. Members of the St
Peter's Society of Change Ringers not only
ring every Sunday at the city’s oldest church, St
Nicholas, and its parish church, St Peter’s, but also
regularly ring at churches across the UK, including St
Paul's Cathedral and St Mary-le-Bow (Bow Bells).
This year we have commissioned the Society to produce a
special piece of bellringing. Come and watch them in action
– or simply listen out as the bells ‘ring in
the faiths’ to herald the start of the festival.
