The
sacred Japanese Shomyo Buddhist monks offer us a rare
glimpse into life in a Japanese temple. Shichiseikai will
perform sutra
chanting
and enact rituals that are usually performed only in
secluded monasteries, far from the public gaze. Voices rise
and fall in beautiful unison to create a rich variety of
harmonic overtones, while the addition of an Indian flute
(bansurai)
takes
their performance to a higher plane.
Shichiseikai has appeared throughout Japan and has toured
France and India.
