sand mandala close-up
Painting with coloured sand is one of the most exquisite artistic traditions of Tibetan Buddhism. The chance to see a sand mandala being created is not to be missed.

You are invited to stop by once, twice or every day to watch the sand mandala take shape, speak with the monks, or simply to sit and meditate. The mandala will be created over five days, during which millions of grains of sand will be painstakingly laid in place using hollow pipes called
chagpurs, through which the sand is vibrated into the design.

When the mandala is finally completed, it will be ritually dismantled during a colourful ceremony, culminating in a procession to the sea, to symbolise the impermanence of existence.
