Divine
Voices
showcases the extraordinary power of our vocal chords to
invoke wonder, awe and mysticism.
We focus on music from the Christian, Jewish and Muslim
faiths, plus a brand new composition and performances in
stunning and unusual venues.
The series launches on 11 September with the soaring
devotional music of
Rizwan-Muazzam Qawwali
from Pakistan.
We
continue in October with stunning
a cappella
singing from Corsica's
Barbara Furtuna;
Cantor Steven Leas
and the
London Jewish Male Choir
in Brighton's historic Middle Street Synagogue; and
renowned Palestinian vocalist
Reem Kelani.
Plus we are proud to present a new composition,
The
Hours, a
12-hour sound installation of singing and recitation from
the world's diverse religious traditions, composed and
performed by UK choral group
The Clerks.
And for
something completely different, we take you down to the
eerie underworld of Brighton's magnificent Victorian sewers
with experimental Norwegian folk singer,
Unni
Løvlid.
